Cultural and Ethnic Music
Milwaukee is an immigrant city, and as such, the influx of various ethnic groups over the past 200 years has had a lasting impression on the local music. Many immigrants have influenced different styles of music such as rock n roll, blues, and jazz. They also had a profound effect on the area by playing more traditional styles of music such as polka, folk, and tribal.
Other ethnic groups have promoted their culture and music through the countless festivals found throughout the Milwaukee summer. These festivals include Irishfest, Festa Italia, Polish Fest, and Mexican Fiesta, among others. Southeast Asian
Southeast Asian immigrants also strive to keep tradition alive through the work of the Hmong American Friendship Association. The association provides lessons in traditional dance and the performance of instruments such as the Qeej.
Latino
Latino immigrants to the city established the Gran Baile, a ball celebrating Mexican music and culture. Hispanic communities have also established many local musical groups and the award-winning Latin Arts Strings Program which tours the United States.

Polka
Polka was designated the state dance in 1994 and comes in four varieties: Polish, Czech/Bohemian, German, and Slovenian. The accordion and fiddle are prominent instruments in this still-popular form of music.
African
The Ko-Thi Dance Company has been preserving the rich tradition of African dance and music since 1969. The company continues to tour nationally and internationally, while also offering a comprehensive educational program called Drum Talk.
Native American
Local Native American groups perform at ceremonies and events throughout the year with traditional dances and music. Such music is closely tied to the history and beliefs of the Native population, often mimicking or reflected the sound of nature.
