Milwaukee Jazz
With its smooth harmonies and swinging melodies, jazz asserted itself onto the Milwaukee music scene in the 1910s when John H. Wickcliffe and his Famous Ginger Band played at the Schlitz Gardens. Since then, a number of acts have both passed through and originated in the City of Festivals. Its infusion of African-American musical traditions with those of European military band music appealed to the diverse population of the city, having an enduring impact on the unique character of the city’s culture.
